 Great news! and then some...

Update on my uncle- He is an incredible amount of pain that meds just dont seem to be helping BUT... he finally was able to secure an appointment at MD Anderson in Houston, TX... that is one of the best cancer treatment centers and they are well versed in his particular cancer... the appointment isnt until Dec 9th but knowing that he actually has a date set is helping him... Please keep him in your prayers... I cannot begin to express how much your prayers mean!

Heartwarming News- Its rare when reading the news online, or the local paper, that I find anything other than drug deals, murders, accidents, missing people, burglaries, etc. I dont like reading or watching the news for that very reason. But yesterday I actually found 2 awesome stories in the SAME paper!   The first was about a local man who has been down on his luck for a couple years and is just barely getting by with his disability checks. A few days ago when he left his apartment to go to the local soup kitchen a woman driving an SUV stopped him. She handed him a card and drove off. The card noted that he had been the recipient of a "random act of kindness" and included $20! You know what the man did? He used $15 of the money towards groceries and then walked up to a random stranger on the street and said, "someone was nice to me today and so I am going to be nice to you," then handed the man his last $5! How AWESOME is THAT?! The next article was about a small town in Maine, Norridgewock. A regular customer at the "What's For Supper" restaurant asked the owner what her plans were for Thanskgiving. She said she would be closing the restaurant for the day and having dinner with family. He asked her if she would be willing to keep the restaurant open to feed people who had no place to go, no family, if he paid for the food. She spoke with her family and they have all decided to help either cook, waitress or clean and forgo their own Thanksgiving dinner to give others a special day! The customer has put forth enough money to pay for 160 dinners and many others have stepped forward to donate food, supplies and time. Just absolutely AMAZING!! Its heartwarming to know that good people are still out there!

Books- I just finished a couple of really great books. One is, "Made in the USA" by Billie Letts (the author of the book turned movie, "Where the Heart Is") and another is "Christmas Jars" by Jason F Wright. The first book, "Made in the USA," is about a teenage girl and her young brother that set out on their own after the lady caring for them (their father's ex girlfriend) dies suddenly). The girl does not want to go into foster care and so she decides that she will find her long lost father. These 2 kids go through hell. In the end an unexpected kindness breaks through the tough outer shell they have built and of course, they find happiness in a place they never dreamed of. The second book, "Christmas Jars," well that book was a bit harder to read. Its not that the subject is complex, its that I could really empathize with the main character. I read the book in less than an hour and when I was doing I was both crying and smiling. I just love books that can actually wrap you up, take you away and make you feel everything the character feels.

And that's a wrap! Ok, I need to separate myself from this little machine for a bit and get some other things done. I'm trying my best to catch up on the comments ya'll have let for me. Oh, and by the way...

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!!

 Holiday cards for heroes

I may not believe in this war but I do believe in and support the men and women who are fighting, have fought, have been wounded or have died in the war. And if a few dollars for a Holiday card brings a little light into their lives then its more than worth it. The article below is from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center website.

Holiday Cards for Heroes

The American Red Cross is sponsoring a national "Holiday Mail for Heroes" campaign to receive and distribute holiday cards to servicemembers and veterans both in the United States and abroad.

Holiday Mail for Heroes, which began Tuesday, Veterans Day, is a follow-up to the 2007 effort that resulted in the collection and distribution of more than 600,000 cards to hospitalized servicemembers. This year's program will expand its reach to not only wounded servicemembers but also veterans and their families. The goal is to collect and distribute 1 million pieces of holiday mail.

"As we enter this holiday season-a time to celebrate with family and friends-it's important to remember the thousands of men and women who serve our nation in harm's way and those who are recovering in military and veterans hospitals," said Army Col. Norvell V. Coots, commander, Walter Reed Health Care System. "The Holiday Mail for Heroes program is a wonderful outreach effort and a great way to acknowledge the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform."

Holiday cards should be mailed to:
Holiday Mail for Heroes
P.O. Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD. 20791-5456

All cards must be postmarked no later than Dec. 10. Cards should not be mailed or delivered to Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

For more information, visit www.wramc.amedd.army.mil or www.redcross.org/holidaymail for Holiday Mail for Heroes program guidelines.Walter Reed is not accepting mail addressed to "A Recovering American Soldier."

 Update: My Uncle

My Uncle has been officially diagnosed with Angiosarcoma, a rare cancer of the liver. Before posting this I tried to do a Google search to get a better understanding of this cancer but there just too much medical jargon for me to sort through at work.

His family doctor is not well versed in this form of cancer and has recommended that he seek out a cancer treatment center. He has narrowed his options down to 2 centers. The first is University of Michigan (doctor recommended) but that center is #7 in the world. His has recommended MD Anderson in Houston which is apparently #1 in the world. He is taking a day to sort through his thoughts on which he prefers. The Michigan center is closer to his home but his daughter lives just outside of Houston. Of course, you know that I am hoping he selects the best center.

The cancer is aggressively attacking his bones in his ribs and back. He has already discovered one broken rib.

Please continue to say prayers. I really appreciate all of your prayers, emails, PM's and support.
